CASE STUDY: REDUCING TOTAL STEEL STRUCTURE WEIGHT BY 20% THROUGH DESIGN OPTIMIZATION

  • 14/05/2026

In high-tech agricultural projects, the challenge is not only about “designing a structure that is safe enough,” but also about optimizing investment costs, construction efficiency, and long-term operational performance.

The Challenge with the Initial Design. According to the original design proposal:
  • The entire frame system used factory-welded steel structures
  • The design followed an overly conservative safety approach
  • Although the structure met load-bearing requirements, several limitations emerged:

Limitations of the previous consultant’s design solution

Problems Identified
  • Excessive structural weight
  • Heavy dependence on cranes and on-site welding
  • High transportation and construction costs
  • Difficult implementation in mountainous terrain and prolonged humid rainy conditions

Most importantly, the investor did not request a “complete redesign,” but instead raised a very practical question: “Is there a more optimized solution that still ensures safety and project schedule?”

Seico Reworked the Problem Together with the Client. Instead of maintaining the original approach, Seico’s engineering team worked closely with the client to reassess all real-world project conditions, including:

  • Actual structural load forces
  • Steel consumption volume
  • Site construction conditions
  • Weather and terrain characteristics
  • Overall operational costs, not just material costs

Seico and the client re-evaluated the entire approach

Through this evaluation process, a more optimized solution was proposed. Seico switched to a lightweight steel truss frame system, optimized according to the project’s actual structural loads.

Key improvements included:

  • Using lightweight steel trusses designed based on actual load calculations
  • Replacing welded connections with bolted connections on site
  • Assembling components at ground level instead of relying entirely on crane installation

Using lightweight steel trusses designed based on actual structural loads

This solution ensured all technical requirements while significantly improving construction flexibility.

Achieved Results:

✔ 20% reduction in total structural frame weight: Directly reduced material costs and improved investment efficiency.

✔ Reduced dependence on lifting equipment: With lighter components, workers could manually handle and install many sections.

✔ More flexible construction under unfavorable weather conditions: Minimized on-site welding, especially suitable for long periods of humid and rainy weather.

✔ Optimized transportation costs: Compact and lightweight components increased truck loading efficiency and reduced the number of transport trips.

✔ Lower overall project costs: Not only were steel structure costs optimized, but construction, operation, and equipment support costs were also significantly reduced.

Reduced the total steel structure weight by 20%

Structural Optimization Is Not Just About Using Less Steel

An effective structural solution is not simply about “using fewer materials,” but about selecting the right solution that matches construction conditions, operational requirements, and real investment objectives.

At Seico, every project is approached from a comprehensive optimization perspective:

  • The right solution for actual usage needs
  • The right solution for site conditions
  • The right solution for long-term cost efficiency

That is the true sustainable value of an effective structural solution.
